2023’s Teen Idol is…

After four weeks, the search for Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District’s (B.I.D.) Teen Idol is over.

Before August 4’s Downtown Sounds concert, Tatiana Andino-Mendez was awarded as 2023’s Teen Idol winner!

Tatiana showed improvement in her self-confidence each week by her movement on stage, addressing the audience and in her vocal control,” said Lou-Ann Thompson, a local singer-songwriter, manager of Glen Floors, and a Teen Idol judge for all four weeks. “Anyone who tries to pull off an Adele song has what it takes to grow musically. We wish her much success in her future.”

The second annual Downtown Sounds Teen Idol vocal contest, which began on July 7, featured four contestants: Tatiana Andino-Mendez, Charlotte Dilgard-Clark, Stasia Kulpa, and Tammy Pattugalan. The first week of the competition saw all four girls compete; after a minor audio issue, all the contestants were invited back the next week to perform. The contest continued July 21 as Andino-Mendez, Kulpa, and Pattugalan performed. On Friday, July 28 the final two contestants faced off with a performance of Adele’s Easy On Me by Andino-Mendez and one of Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You by Kulpa.

Andino-Mendez is a 17-year-old from Glen Cove. She is a recent graduate from Glen Cove High School. Andino-Mendez likes to spend her free time drawing, singing, dancing, and reading true crime books.

“I’m so incredibly grateful for all the support and encouragement I got from everyone during and even after the competition. The other girls were the sweetest and we all truly supported one another,” said Andino-Mendez. “Singing has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl and my dream was to become a singer, now with this competition, that little push for that dream to come true has come to fruition, and I’m truly excited for where this new chapter will lead me.”

As the winner of the Teen Idol contest, Andino-Mendez received four hours of recording time at Tiki Recording Studios as well as $1,500. Andino-Mendez also performed God Bless America at 2023’s National Night Out and will be performing at the Glen Cove Downtown B.I.D.’s Holiday Festival in December.

“This year’s Teen Idol contest proved to be another success,” said Jill Nossa the Executive Director at the B.I.D. “I’m very happy for Tatiana, who brought positive energy along with her talent to every performance, and I look forward to having her perform at future events in the coming months.”
