Perfect warm and sunny weather, a Saturday morning in May, and good music is the perfect recipe for a day of working out and self-care. Over the weekend the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) had just that for its second Wellness Day in Village Square. The event served as a sampler for people to try out all the different fitness and wellness businesses Downtown Glen Cove has to offer.
From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the day was packed full of fitness and wellness. Six different gyms located in Downtown Glen Cove held 30-minute classes in Village Square. The event was complete with other wellness vendors and finished with sound bowl meditation.
Wellness Day opened with a yoga session by TwoPointOm. Around 30 people gathered, laying out their yoga mats and filling the Square with calm vibes. Attendees were guided through beginner yoga poses and meditation where they found their Zen while preparing for the day of workouts ahead.
“Wellness Day 2024 was a huge success! It was wonderful to kick off the morning with yoga. Leading so many community members in a practice of strength and composure,” said Allie Basdavanos, owner of TwoPointOm. “The day was filled with fitness, connections, laughter and sun.”
Next, the day was taken up to the next level. Level Up Glen Cove came out to instruct attendees in a high energy upbeat workout. Guests were on their feet and breaking out a sweat.
Tenth Legion Fitness by Glen Cove Fitness had participants going in one-minute circuits, working out their full body: abs, legs and arms.
Blood and music were pumping at 11:30 when Rumble Boxing took to the Square with kicking music and a knockout workout.
Attendees went head-to-head with F45 Training’s trainers. Squats, planks and jump rope were amongst the challenges in F45’s “Beat the Trainer” contests. During the contest, F45 and TwoPointOm entertained onlookers in an intense plank battle.
Soca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Glen Cove laid out the mats for a demo by two students and informed attendees on the mental and physical benefits of jiu-jitsu.
After a long day of sweating and grinding, Wellness Day came to a peaceful end. Amidst the loud hustle and bustle of Village Square, participants tuned in to a relaxing sound bowl meditation by Living Lotus Group.
“It’s such an honor for Level Up to participate in Wellness Day,” said Nicole Robinson-Helmus, owner of Level Up Fitness Glen Cove. “What better way for us all to come together and empower the community than with a fitness class that encourages you to ‘Level Up’ with our total body fitness class we offer and bring out the best version of you?!”
After each class participants had time to make their way to the Glen Cove BID’s table to pick up one raffle ticket for each class they attended, to help themselves to some water, and to visit the vendor tables set up around Village Square.
Any attendees or passersby could gather information on organizing from Basket Case Organizing, learn about beauty services from Analis Body and Beauty Co., pick up some herbal teas from Holistic and Herby, treat themselves to a free facial from Glowbar at Rumble Boxing, and learn about the participating gyms. The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset was on hand to distribute information and remind people to register to vote, and the event also provided an opportunity for the director of Age Friendly Glen Cove to outreach to the community.
“We had a perfect day and a great turnout. We created this event as a way to introduce the community to our many downtown fitness and wellness businesses, and it was wonderful to see so much engagement,” said Jill Nossa, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Downtown BID. “Last year’s Wellness Day was rained out, so we’re thrilled that this event was able to take place and happen so successfully this year.”
