For more than 40 years, Hair Above Salon has been the go-to establishment for haircuts, colors and styles for the Glen Cove community. Owners Stan and Debbie Sommers were honored at the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District’s annual meeting on March 9 for reaching this milestone.
Located at 1 School Street since 1984, the salon has been serving clients since 1980; its first location was on Forest Avenue before moving to the larger space downtown.
Over the past four decades, the Sommers have served thousands of clients, including numerous families who they’ve watched grow over the years; in fact, they’re now on their fourth generation of clients.
Stan and Debbie were presented with a trophy by BID Executive Director Patricia Holman, and citations from the offices of Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, Assemblyman Charles Lavine and Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck. DeRiggi-Whitton reminisced about having her hair done there for special events, including prom, and Panzenbeck remembered visiting the salon for her first haircut after becoming a mother.
Stan Sommers was a member of the BID Board of Directors for 10 years, and served as treasurer of Glen Cove CARES for 10 years, an organization that both he and Debbie have been an active part of since its founding. Though residents of Huntington, their commitment to Glen Cove both as business owners and as active community members has made the city feel like a second home. The salon has survived many ups and downs over the years – including the Covid-19 pandemic—and the Sommers are grateful for their loyal customers.
