April showers have brought May flowers to the police booth in downtown Glen Cove! The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) has worked with the Glen Cove High School National Art Honors Society (NAHS) again this year to decorate the booth, located on Bridge Street, with vibrant Spring images.
In recent years, the BID and GCHS Art Club have been working together to showcase the local talented artists of Glen Cove and bring more art to the town. The school has created window displays for different seasons in the police booth, light post banners that hang throughout the Summer and recently participated in an Art Crawl. More information about these projects can be found here.
“The collaboration between the NAHS and the BID, was truly a valued partnership this year for the club! The members really thrived in participating and showcasing their talents to the Glen Cove Community,” said Maria Verni, the visual arts teacher and NAHS advisor at Glen Cove High School. “The students are looking forward to continuing this partnership in the coming school year.”
Glen Cove High School students Phoebe Pinder, Aurora Seery, Nahla Gomez, Katherine Bernal, Anthony Edwards, Giorgina Dondero, Shannen Garzon, Mariah Cueva, Jocelyn Portillo Godoy, Natalie Macnow, Guy Campos, Michelle Chumpitaz, Mariela Hernandez Estevez, and Ayva Colato each created individual sketches for the display. Of those, the students voted on the best three for the police booth windows.
The art students all worked together to design and paint each mural that is displayed in the windows. On a rainy May Friday, club treasurer, Laura Rodriguez and NAHS member, Sara Rodriguez came to install the artwork in the booth.
“I have always seen value in showcasing talented artists and having art be an integral part in creating a community space,” said Jill Nossa, Executive Director of the BID. “Collaborating with the High School has allowed us to do so all while brightening up the downtown with wonderful artwork.”
