Businesses celebrated at Glen Cove Downtown BID’s annual meeting
Despite all the pandemic-related obstacles, 2021 was a good year for downtown Glen Cove, and the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District was as busy as ever. All the programs, projects and events produced by the Downtown BID were presented in detail at the organization’s annual meeting, held on March 10 at the Metropolitan Restaurant and Bar.
More than 60 people attended the meeting, where Executive Director Patricia Holman reported on the events that took place last year and explained the function of the BID. An organization made up of property owners and commercial tenants, the BID delivers supplemental services such as public events, marketing and promotional programs, capital improvements and beautification for the downtown area, Holman said. In 2021, all of its annual events resumed in person, and new events were added: Fitness in Village Square, and the first annual Downtown Sounds New Year’s Eve concert. Holman said she and the other members of the Downtown Sounds Committee were “thrilled” to be able to return to the live concert format last summer, and noted that the concerts drew larger crowds than in years past. The Halloween Parade and Festival and Holiday Festival also proved to be successful, and the Holiday Festival saw the largest turnout in its 20-plus year history.
Guest speakers included Rep. Tom Suozzi, Senator Kevin Thomas, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and Mayor Pam Panzenbeck, who swore in the 2022 BID Board of Directors.
After Holman’s report, she presented two businesses with special awards. La Famiglia Pizzeria and Restaurant was awarded as “Best Downtown Dining Space in Downtown Glen Cove” for its “transformative” outdoor dining experience, Holman said, noting the new awnings, umbrellas, lights and plants that were added last year to create an inviting space for customers. Glenn Optics received the award for “Best Display Windows in Downtown Glen Cove.”
Glen Floors was also recognized for celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. A slideshow was created by store manager and BID Vice President Lou-Ann Thompson that provided the history of this family-owned business on Glen Street, started in 1932 by Fred Capobianco. An award and a cake designed to resemble the storefront were presented to the Capobianco family in honor of this milestone.
