The Glen Cove Public Library’s Hope Mural has made its way to downtown!
The Hope mural was created by the Glen Cove Public Library and the City of Glen Cove Office of Veteran Services, with the intention of honoring our veterans and celebrating Earth Day. The mural, which is made of recycled bottle caps and pallets, was created in the Winter. Downtown businesses and other local businesses put out bottle cap collection boxes; the community worked together to accumulate boxes of bottle caps for the library to use. Volunteers then gathered at the library to help clean and place the bottle caps to form the mural now displayed around Glen Cove. The project was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Lydia Wen, Glen Cove Public Library History Room archivist and librarian, artist-in-residence Amanda Fisk, carpenter Michael Danchalski, and Glen Cove Veterans Services Office Director Anthony Jimenez.
The Hope Mural is now proudly on display in Downtown Glen Cove. The colorful piece can be seen as you enter the downtown area. Thanks to Kimco Realty, owner of the Staples Center, the mural will be displayed on the corner of Brewster and School Street until September. In front of the mural is a QR code that can be scanned to provide more information.
“Lydia, Amanda and Mike have all put so much time and effort into this display and I think it shows,” said Jill Nossa, Executive Director of the Glen Cove Downtown BID. “It is a beautiful message and cornerstone to downtown and we are so happy to have it displayed in this area just in time for all the Downtown Sounds concert attendees to see.”
Before coming to downtown, the mural has been displayed at the Glen Cove Public Library, the Senior Center, Friends Academy and Glen Cove High School. The project and display has been possible due to Wen, Fisk, and Danchalski’s dedication to volunteering their time and vehicles to moving the mural to each location.
