Glen Cove Downtown BID

About the BID

The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District is the heart of Glen Cove. Strategically located adjacent to Glen Cove’s waterfront, the downtown encompasses part of State Route 107/Glen Cove Road, Pulaski Street, Glen Cove Avenue, Brewster Street, School Street, Glen Street, and Bridge Street. All downtown parking is free.

In addition to on-street parking, Glen Cove offers two multi-level municipal parking garages and three municipal lots. Our downtown is just four-tenths of a mile from the Long Island Railroad. The downtown is serviced by Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) Bus.

What is a BID?

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a specific geographic area, established under the guidelines of New York State law, which enables local property owners and businesses within the area to finance supplemental services and programs beyond those the local government provides.

The BID is run by a board of directors comprised of those property owners, businesses and residents who determine the BID budget and the budget priorities. The BID budget is based on a special assessment which is paid by the property owners in the BID area.

WHAT WE DO

In addition to being an advocate for the downtown businesses and property owners, the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District has designed a variety of projects, services and events that benefit all within the designated district. The businesses that actively participate benefit the most, and we encourage every BID member to get involved.

EVENTS

The Downtown BID produces the Downtown Sounds free concert series every July and August. Friday nights in July and August the downtown is alive with music, people, good food and great times. All businesses located within the BID are entitled to add to the goody bags handed out to the audience at each concert. It’s a free way to get your business name out to the large crowds gathering downtown weekly.

Each year, the Downtown BID holds a Halloween Costume Parade. Children and their parents fill the streets in colorful costumes, and following the parade, they trick-or-treat from store to store. More fun takes place in Village Square, where there are pie-eating contests, costume contests, games, music, bouncy houses and more.

The Downtown BID holds an annual Holiday Festival, followed by the City of Glen Cove’s community tree lighting, on the first Saturday of December to kick off the holiday shopping season. Horse and carriage rides, hot chocolate and candy canes, live music and visits with Santa are just a few of the activities taking place throughout the day.

The Downtown BID works along with other organizations that bring events to the downtown.

STREET BEAUTIFICATION

The Downtown BID maintains the landscaping in the public walkways to the municipal lots and garages. Public spaces throughout the downtown are also planted, mulched and maintained throughout the year. Every spring, the BID purchases flower baskets for the downtown light poles. In the fall, cornstalks and bows are purchased for the light poles. In the winter, the BID provides holiday decorations throughout the downtown. The BID also purchases light pole banners and street furniture as needed to help improve the downtown area.

BUSINESS SUPPORT

The Downtown BID acts as a clearinghouse for the downtown. The BID maintains a listing of available downtown properties, a member directory and a directory of assistance for small businesses.

The Glen Cove Downtown BID maintains this website as a resource for its members. Each downtown business has the option to have its own (free) page that they can edit themselves – almost a mini website. The Downtown BID is on Facebook to alert friends of timely items.

The BID works with the City of Glen Cove as a partner to keep our members informed, to alert them to programs offered by the city that may benefit them, such as the Façade and Sign grant programs.

The BID holds informative seminars of interest to business owners. Past seminars have included “Window Dressing,” “Emergency Management for the Small Business,” “Guerilla Marketing” and “Morning Coffee Networking” to name just a few.

Marketing Glen Cove is one of the BID’s priorities. We periodically hold “Downtown Open Houses” to invite potential investors to see what Glen Cove has to offer. We also periodically place BID-sponsored advertising.
